‘Miles Ahead’ is a movie that steers away from the biopic, and instead explores just a few days in the life and music of one of the godfathers of jazz. By focusing on a short time in the late 1970s, allowed the actor and director to make a movie that “felt like Miles, than about Miles”.

The movie is a personal triumph of the shining actor, known for his roles in Ocean’s Eleven, Traffic and Brooklyn’s Finest. The project was in the making for 10 years, and even started life as an Indiegogo campaign to fund it when no studio would.

To take on the role of the iconic trumpeter, Don Cheadle, who plays the trumpet for real in ‘Miles Ahead’, spent four years learning the instrument. “The trumpet is one the meanest and hardest instruments that there is,” he said. “The learning curve is very steep. I still practice everyday.”

Jazz fiends will love this take on Davis’s life through the eyes of Don Cheadle, himself a Davis fan.

Everything about the movie from its cast, the lengths it took to make it and the way it was financed, captures the very essence of the trailblazing, Miles Davis. Raw, edgy, risk-taking and formidable. A must see for both Davis fans as well as those who live life from their heart and soul.

Miles Ahead is released on 1 April in cinemas
