Best Beauty Find: Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic

Keeping your tresses silky soft and nourished starts with a healthy scalp. Before I discovered Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic, I would treat my scalp once a week to a leave-in treatment such as amla oil.

As nourishing as the amla oil was for my scalp and left my hair shiny, it was rather high maintenance – I would leave it in overnight and have to shampoo it at least twice to remove the excess oil the next day. I often wondered whether the vigorous after-treatment washing was in fact cancelling out all the benefits of the oil to my scalp.

Thankfully Weleda have created a hair tonic that can be used daily without having to wash out and that doesn’t leave oily deposits on the hair. The main ingredient in Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic is rosemary oil, which is known for stimulating hair growth and improving circulation of the scalp. Additional extracts of stonecrop and horseradish leaves are said to improve the supply of nutrients to the roots of the hair, maintaining a healthy scalp.

Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic is recommended for hair loss and dryness, but for me I was looking for a treatment that would help me deal with a dry scalp, which I have had on-and-off for years largely due to neglect of my scalp, hair dyes and use of harsh shampoos.

Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic gives a cooling sensation on touch to the scalp. Scalp treatments are never the easiest to apply, especially when having to wade through thick hair, but the Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic has a water-like consistency as opposed to oily, which makes it easy to apply drops and massage with your fingertips into the scalp.

Just as with starting any new product, you have to be persistent and consistent with the Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic. It is recommended that you use it twice a day. I used it once daily for a month, applying a few drops on both wet and dry hair, before I really started to notice the benefits.

After a month of use, my scalp was significantly less dry and I found that with its cooling sensation on touch, to be an invigorating part of my morning beauty regime. It’s too early days to see how this product benefits over long term use. The hair tonic is also said to strengthen the hair shaft at the roots, so it will be interesting to monitor the difference it makes after a few months of use.

Given that the Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic does not leave any oily build up on the hair shaft, it can be used daily without your hair at the roots looking greasy or leaving any residue. The water-like consistency of the tonic is due to the alcohol contained in the product. Do not be alarmed. I myself am not an advocator of using any alcohol-based products on my skin, but Weleda use skin-friendly alcohols, derived from natural plant sources – including organic grain – in their haircare range. Known as ‘fatty alcohols’, they contain oily molecules that give a smooth, soft feel to the hair shaft.

Anybody who makes their own essential oil blends will be familiar with the potent smell of rosemary oil. However, the scent of Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic’s dominant ingredient is toned down in this instance, leaving a fresh, woody scent that does not overpower.

Overall the Weleda Revitalising Hair Tonic is a non time-consuming, low maintenance scalp treatment that is a beneficial addition to any daily hair and scalp routine. The small bottle goes a long way and it will give you months worth of use, which for the price is a bargain really. Weleda Hair Revitalising Hair Tonic, RRP £9.95 for 100ml
