Artist Spotlight: Nieves Pumarejo’s Universe

Artist and illustrator Nieves Pumarejo is exploring oneness with one’s inner self and the universe through a series of illustrations, mixed media and linocuts.

Looking at the whole or the bigger picture, Nieves Pumarejo’s art looks at the interconnectedness between the elements, the universe, magic and emotions.

In a series of circular illustrations, known as The Circle Collection, Nieves has depicted the moon, the sun and the earth. These circle of life drawings, as it were, capture the essence of female figures which are light, loving and nurturing, just like the energy put into these illustrations using inks, pens, pencils and markers on paper and watercolour paper.

Nieves’ artwork offer delicate and intricate portrayals of the feminine and divine that are charming, warm and graceful.

Speaking about her art, Nieves Pumarejo said: “My work is about discovering our inner self and about the connection with the wholeness, nature, life, death, the universe…we are part of a beautiful system that is beyond the simple view of life.

“Through my work, I like to explore ideas of that connection, beauty and emotions. The night and the universe, the flora and fauna, womanhood, the poetry of everything.”

Another collection that Nieves is developing are a series of digital drawings and art inspired by natural elements, textures and colours. Illustrative female figures feature nature elements within and around them – their hair often being the centrepiece for nature, with leaves and plants intertwined in their tresses.
