Sustainable Stays: The Moon Lodge, Cornwall

Cornwall is one of those places in the UK where you are guaranteed a magical trip. And the Moon Lodge, part of The Living Well Centre in West Penwith, offers exactly that.

This little sanctuary has its won private woodland, where you can lose yourselves during the day and enjoy the stars at night from the comfort of your own bed as you can look through tall windows.

The Moon Lodge is a hand sculpted cob roundhouse, set within a woodland location that even houses its own ancient holy well. A perfect getaway for a couple who want to live simply yet magically for a weekend, Moon Lodge also encourages you to get down to basics when it comes to mealtimes as you can cook din dins the old-fashioned way on a gas stove or over the fire pit outside the dwellings.

Constructed from local, recycled, reclaimed and organic material wherever possible, The Moon Lodge is a quirky living space that is designed as an “Earth Womb” or a place to be held by the Earth. The walls are made from cob, local straw bales and reclaimed glass bottles, while the roof was constructed with rafters from trees which came from local Penzance.

Decked out in rugs, Bedouin-style cushions and a futon, The Moon Lodge is a back-to-basics style accommodation with flair. It’s off-grid, meaning there’s no electricity, so candles and rechargeable lanterns are the order of the stay. It’s not going to be to everyone’s liking but if you are ones who want to connect to nature, right down to its natural resources, then The Moon Lodge may be right up your street, so to speak. You can charge electronics at a nearby source if needed, but try going electronics-free during your stay.

Worth noting that there’s no “en-suite” facilities by way of bathroom, so a trip to the shared cabin 30m away is where you will find compost toilets, and gas and wood burning showers. The Moon Lodge has got green down to a T!
