The root chakra, located at the base of the spine, is crucial to one’s survival and safety. The first of the seven chakras, it is the one that grounds us to our physical world – establishing connections with your physical body, your environment and the earth.
As the root chakra is the survival centre, it instigates the fight or flight response. The energy of the root chakra or base chakra allows one to harness courage, resourcefulness and the will to live during trying times. The root chakra is where we draw our life force energy otherwise known as kundalini energy.
Given that the root chakra or base chakra grounds one to the earth, an imbalanced root chakra leads to feelings such as ungrounded, fearful, unsafe and insecurity. It is of course important to look after all your chakras, but be aware the importance of the root chakra, for an imbalanced root chakra leads to all seven chakras being out-of-sync.
Root Chakra Body Systems:
Reproductive Organs; Immune System, Large Intestines, Lymph system; Skeletal system (teeth and bones); Reproductive organs; prostrate gland (male); Bladder and Excretory systems; Lower extremeties (legs, ankles, feet).
Associations & Qualities:
Stability, Security, Physical/Material, Groundedness, Vitality, Will Power, Identity; Basic Survival Needs (food, shelter, clothing, rest, money, procreation); Self Preservation; Root Support
Signs your root chakra is balanced:
You will feel secure in your world and daily tasks will seem effortless. You will not have any doubts about your place in the world and all aspects of your life will work for you – relationships, wellbeing, finances and career.
Signs your root chakra is out of balance:
Given that the root chakra is about survival, an imbalanced root chakra can lead to lack in stability and rootedness, or greed and angry at life.
If the root chakra is over-active you may become greedy and want to control others. You may also become very materialistic or impulsive and think that your value or self-worth exists in having such things. You may also have an over-active sex drive.
If your root chakra is under-active you may feel disconnected from the world around you, including from your body. You may lack focus, discipline or stamina. You may feel disorganised, anxious, depressed or insecure. You will have trouble obtaining financial security.
Physical symptoms of an imbalanced root chakra will include weight-loss or gain, constipation, over or underactive sex drive, poor immune system, anaemia, depression, laziness, irritable bowel system (IBS).
There are a number of ways that you can heal the root chakra – using essential oils, eating root vegetables and cooking with herbs and spices, to name but a few. Check out the below methods to assist with the healing of the Root Chakra.

These essential oils can be topically applied by combining with a carrier oil then rubbing into the base of the spine, where the root chakra is located. Or if you are in need of grounding, for instance, open a bottle of one of these root chakra-balancing essential oils and smell the aroma as your visualize yourself standing and growing roots into the earth.

Burdock root, dandelion, paprika, cayenne pepper, cloves, rosemary, horseradish.

Energetic healing for all chakras:
There are a number of techniques you can use to clear and cleanse the root chakra on a vibrational or energetic level. You can try the chakra meditations which use binaural beats.
There is also a common meditative technique which is to visualise a pure white light flowing from the root chakra to the crown chakra. Visualise that energy of pure light flowing up from the root chakra to the crown chakra and also flowing through each chakra front-and-back. Focus on this light flowing through each of your chakras and visualise the pure while light clearing, cleansing and removing all energies that do not belong to you.
