Jazz drummer and hip hop producer, Karriem Riggins, drops his second solo album, Headnod Suite, on Stones Throw Records this Friday.
The 29-track album, Headnod Suite, is an album of hip hop instrumentals. Although less evidently jazz than his first album, 2012’s Alone Together, the influence that is clearly in Karriem Riggin’s DNA and bloodline is still there and shows its face on tracks, just like in Bahia Dreamin, which starts off on a beat quest and gradually moves into an exit of jazz keys and drums. While Chop Chop is a stunning instrumental short, most of the tracks on the album being around the two minute mark, which has obvious jazz undercurrents too.
A long-time drummer for Common, the hip hop artist makes a debut on Karriem Riggins’ Headnod Suite on Yes Yes Y’all.
“Headnod Suite is a concept of several rhythmic ideas fused together,” Karriem Riggins said. “I wanted to explore the power of interludes and marrying different styles and harmony together.”
Karriem Riggins’ Headnod Suite is out on Stones Throw Records on 24 February
