Bamboo Bicycle Club take cycling to another “green” level

Cycling enthusiasts may want to take their bike riding up a green notch or two and build their own bamboo bicycle. Bamboo Bicycle Club are making it possible for people to build their own bike from this key sustainable material.

The east London-based Bamboo Bicycle Club is a social enterprise that provides learning to people wanting to design, build and ride their very own custom-made bamboo bicycle.

Combining passion for sustainable transport and material use wherever possible, the Club was founded by two bike-riding engineers whose aim was to create a bicycling community interested in building their own robust and safe bamboo bicycle frame.

Bamboo Bicycle Club state: “Against a tide of mass consumption, we believe that in the future people will choose and customise more and more, to create the ideal product for them. Bamboo is the most accessible bicycle material and provides incredible properties for creating the perfect bicycle you will love.”

Bamboo Bicycle Club has helped individuals create tandems, hybrids, electric and cargo bikes.

The Club has also experimented with a number of sustainable materials including hemp for binding. As a fibre hemp is UV resistant and has a strong webbing structure which is ideal for composite bonding. The growth of hemp has been shown to reduce air pollution, enrich soil, and conserve forests.

As well as workshops, Bamboo Bicycle Club also offer home build kits.
