Superfood powders put to the test

If you are looking to better your health – be it to boost energy levels, improve concentration or to lose weight – introducing nutrient-dense superfoods into your diet can benefit the body by healing and protecting on many levels.

Superfood powders typically consist of a bulk, powdered version of superfoods in a raw, natural state. They are not exclusively for detox purposes so superfood powders can be introduced into your lifestyle all year round for better health.

Highly nutritious

A green superfood powder is a blend of highly nutritious greens, which usually contain a mix of ingredients such as alfalfa, green barley, wheatgrass, kelp, spirulina and chlorella. The powdered version makes them easy to mix in water, smoothies or juice.

Most superfood powders are carefully processed – freeze-dried or under cold temperatures – to ensure that all the whole food nutrients are kept intact and unadulterated. The nutrients: vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, polyphenols, bioflavonoids and many others, are incredibly healthy micronutrients that can help inhibit cellular damage and oxidative stress in your body. These superfoods are used in a wide range of detoxification programs, including heavy metal elimination, and they are typically rich in chlorophyll. Increasing the amount of chlorophyll in your diet is an excellent way to deliver oxygen throughout the body, build new tissue, and boost immunity.

Green superfood powders can also help boost your natural energy levels, protect your immune system, aid weight loss, and provide a host of other healthy benefits. Premium quality green products can be found at your local health food store.

Seek advice

There are many supergreen powder formulas to choose from which can be daunting for those who have never tried it before. When looking for a supergreens formula, be specific about what purpose you are using it for, as some formulas will have a higher concentration of a particular nutrient that may be required for those who are convalescing for instance.

Always speak to a naturopath about which superfoods powder would be best for you to take.

Best for seasoned users of superfood powders:
Pukka Clean Greens
Pukka Clean Greens is an organic daily blend of 11 super-rich green foods including nettle, kale sprouts, wheatgrass powder and peppermint leaf. Pukka Clean Greens, owing to its addition of ginger root which albeit subtle, is the most palatable of superfoods powder I’ve ever tried. I was able to drink this with water, as opposed to adding the greens to a juice or a smoothie.

pukka clean greensPukka Clean Greens come in convenient sachets, meaning the right amount of greens is added to water or a smoothie. The powdered mix blends well into liquid. Pukka Clean Greens gave an instant energy boost and has an alkalising effect on the gut without being as overpowering as some superfood powders when you first start taking them.

Pukka Clean Greens comes in a box of sachets, but if you want to just try it to see how you get along with it, you can buy it in single sachets from good health food stores.

Pukka Clean Greens is a convenient blend that is good for those who are on the go or for those that simply want to take superfoods only when in need of a boost, as opposed to a daily supplement for their health. Pukka Clean Greens also comes in capsule formula, but this would not be my preferred way to get the benefits of a superfood powder.

Pukka, known for their range of teas as well as supplements, is the most well known of brands on this list of superfood brands. It’s a good choice if you are either new to superfood powders or want to use only when you feel your body needs it. It doesn’t contain as many ingredients as say the other superfood powders, but that is neither here nor there. The health benefits are still apparent.

The Bristol-based brand, Pukka, is known for its commitment to fair trade and sustainable organic farming, and you would do well to choose Pukka. The company “buy energy-efficient equipment, reuse and recycle”, and of all the brands are the most transparent in providing consumers with information on their website to assist you in making an informed choice.

You would do well to choose Pukka Clean Greens as a superfood powder, but as I said for seasoned use it is great. For daily use and to see more long-term benefits, you may want to try a different superfood powder and perhaps one that gives more green power and punch, if that is what you desire.

Pukka Clean Greens, prices start from £1.25 for a single 4g sachet or £27.95 for a 112g box

Best for newbies to superfood powders:
Synergy Natural Super Greens
Synergy Natural Super Greens is a synergistic blend of spirulina, chlorella, barley grass and wheat grass – all organic ingredients. While Synergy Natural Super Greens has less ingredients than many other supergreens brands, do not be deterred. According to Synergy Natural,  “meaningful amounts of a few potent ingredients may be significantly more beneficial than low amounts of a large number of ingredients”.

synergy super greensMixing the powder with juice in the morning, gives a sustainable energy boost and alertness that far outweighs any cup of tea or coffee. Taking a supergreens drink is not the most palatable, but the Synergy Natural Super Greens blend contains the natural sweetener Stevia. This formula mixed better with juice rather than water or a smoothie, as the sweetness of the Stevia took the edge off the bitter taste of the greens. Mixing it once daily in juice makes it more palatable. I tried it with Cawston Press’s Apple & Rhubarb juice, and I found the addition of Synergy Natural Super Greens brought out the flavour of the rhubarb making the green formula easier to ingest. So experiment with the drinks that you add it to to make it as palatable as possible.

It is recommended that you consume supergreen drinks daily for at least a month to see benefits, I found Synergy Natural Super Greens to aid concentration and boost energy levels almost instantaneously from starting consumption. After a few days, I found my skin to be more supple and moisturised. By three to four weeks, I noticed acidity levels in my stomach felt more balanced, thanks largely to the alkalising effects that supergreens brings to the body.

Synergy Natural Super Greens is a great introduction to those who are new to supergreens and are using it for the purpose of daily optimum health, including better energy levels, healthier skin, hair and nails, improving concentration levels and for balancing out the toxin levels of other foodstuffs consumed.

Synergy Natural Super Green tends to absorb more easily and effectively through the body, with often immediate results, than any vitamin or mineral supplement. It is affordable and completely priceless when it comes to one’s health and wellbeing.

Australian brand Synergy are transparent when it comes to their ethical practices. Their ingredients, including spirulina and chlorella for example, are sourced from a sub-tropical island in the Pacific Ocean, utilising pure, underground spring water as a growth medium. The brand also make sure that their ingredients are grown as far away as possible from heavy industrial operations and pollution-free environments.

The only drawback with the Synergy brand is that they pack their natural powders into plastic containers. Synergy have chosen to pack their products in opaque HDPE recyclable plastic because they say “recyclable plastic acts as an effective barrier to light. Glass, although a wonderful recyclable material is in this instance, not the most desirable as the potency and shelf may be reduced in a short time due to light transmission and oxidation if oxygen is not excluded”.

While Synergy are wholeheartedly honest about this and I understand their reasoning, it does seem a shame to pack such a healthy blend of pure plant power into something so un-natural as plastic. Synergy Natural Super Greens is a great product and the health benefits are immense, but the plastic bottle container lets it down on that part. This is a personal opinion, and if plastic doesn’t intuitively bode well with you in this instance, choose a different superfood product.

Best for people familiar with taking superfood powders:
Kiki’s Nature’s Living Superfood
As a superfood powder, they don’t pack as much punch as Nature’s Living Superfood. Nature’s Living Superfood contains a wide spectrum of nutrients in their natural complex state, including antioxidants, chlorophyll, as well as the added benefits of enzymes and probiotics.

I’ve been taking Nature’s Living Superfood on-and-off for years and have found it to be one of the best for those who are used to the potency of superfoods and taste. This powerful formula has a good cleansing effect on the body and gives your immune system a quick acting boost. Even at the first sign of a cold, taking a teaspoon full of Nature’s Living Superfood in juice for two days was enough for symptoms to completely vanish by the third day.

After a month of using Nature’s Living Superfood I found my complexion to be fresher and brighter, my gut felt settled and my digestion had improved with very little if no bloating. The thing with supergreens powders, you are actually consuming greens in their purest, most natural state and with Nature’s Living Superfood, it left me feeling fuller for longer, and the desire to eat was less.

kiki's nature's living superfoodWhen you start to look after your body’s gut in particular, you rarely feel the need or urge to eat junk food. The alkalising effect of Nature’s Living Superfood for me made the want to only put healthy and nutritious food in my body all the more stronger, and also my gut would actually reject anything that was not food in its most natural state. For me, it felt like Nature’s Living Superfood was adjusting my body to its healthiest and most natural state of being.

Nature’s Living Superfood’s ingredients are of the finest quality and unlike some cheaper supergreens powders, Nature’s Living Superfood does not contain any inexpensive bulk such as rice, bran, barley or malt. It is more expensive than many other brands, but a 142g jar with daily use will last around 30 days.

The taste of superfood powders are not the easiest to get used to and Nature’s Living Superfood is no different. As with all other supergreens powders, it is about experimenting with juices and smoothies to make it as palatable as possible.

Nature’s Living Superfood is a great product for anybody whose body is used to taking super foods and want to support their everyday health and vitality. For somebody that is new to supergreen powders, the cleansing effects may be a little strong so if you are going to start with Nature’s Living Superfood lessen the amount to half a teaspoon daily.

Kiki Health package their Nature’s Living Superfood in amber bottles, which from a sustainable and healthy perspective really resonated with me. The company state that “all ingredients are meticulously chosen and ethically processed to preserve and maximise the beneficial and powerful elements, ensuring unsurpassed bioavailability”. They don’t go into the details of this as much as other brands such as Synergy, but Kiki Nature’s Living Superfood for me was the most sound on all fronts and the health benefits immense. This is the brand that my intuition was drawn too and having used it on-and-off, when the need calls for it, this is always the one superfood powder that my inner being reaches out too. As with anything, go with your intuition on making a choice of superfood powder and stick with it for you will see the benefits to your health, some instant and some over a course of a few weeks

Kiki’s Nature’s Living Superfood, prices from £29.95 for 150g

Best for advanced users of superfood powders:
Naturya
Naturya do a range of supergreens products in powder form including spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass and barleygrass, as well as other superfoods including acai and chia seeds.

These products come in single, vacuum packed sachets and are ideal for those who want to introduce one supergreens powder into their diet, but also for those superfood users who have a strong nutritional awareness of what their body needs and want to make their own blends.

naturyaNaturya make high quality superfoods powders which can be added to juices, smoothies and foods. I made a powerful superfood blend of chlorella, wheatgrass and spirulina, which when mixed daily in the morning, in a juice or smoothie, gave me a balanced flow of energy that was sustained throughout the day. It was great for concentration levels as well as improving digestion and eliminating toxins from the skin and body.

The good thing about Naturya products is that you can mix and match your supergreens depending on what your body needs, as advised by a nutritionist or health advisor. For any advanced user of supergreens, I found this to be a creative and affordable way in which for me to do that.
