bio-bean’s vision to turn the waste of 1 in 2 cups of coffee drank in the UK into biofuels

Green energy pioneers bio-bean, who are at the forefront of recycling waste coffee grounds, is currently capturing the waste from one in 10 cups of coffee drank in the UK and turning them into biofuels.

With its pioneering technologies of turning used coffee grounds into a cheap, renewable fuel that can be used in wood-burning stoves, bio-bean hope to extend its capture of coffee waste to 1 in 2 cups of coffee drank in the UK in the near future.

bio-bean, which was founded three years ago by architecture student Arthur Kay, collects coffee ground waste from coffee shops, retailers, airports across the UK, particularly where a high volume of coffee is consumed, as well as coffee factories, and then turns them into biofuel.

The grounds are stripped of oil and packed together to form small bricks, which are odourless.

According to bio-bean’s CEO Arthur Kay, coffee logs are a cheaper alternative to wood. He said: “Coffee logs produce more heat for your money than other fuels – and burn for much longer than wood.”

bio-bean’s coffee logs are ideal for open fires, multi-fuel stoves and chimineas, that can be used to heat homes.

On a commercial scale, bio-bean also manufacture biomass pellets, also made from recycled coffee waste, that are carbon neutral, advanced biofuels used for heating buildings, thus displacing fossil fuels.

bio-bean is the first company in the world to industrialise the process of recycling waste coffee grounds into advanced biofuels and biochemicals. bio-bean works within the existing energy and waste infrastructure, developing sustainable products and solutions to displace conventional fuels and chemicals.

bio-bean is currently undertaking development into the commercial application of biodiesel from waste coffee grounds.
