Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center: Experiencing sustainable living in New Mexico

Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center in New Mexico is making it possible for people to get a taste for sustainable living and be self-sufficient within an off-grid environment that showcases land restoration, organic gardening, passive solar design, and wise water techniques.

Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center, which is also home to couple Amanda and Andy Bramble, hosts workshops, community events, retreats, residencies, volunteer programs, and internships for everyday folks wanting to learn more about sustainable practices and systems.

Amanda and Andy Bramble say: “Our whole approach to sustainability is about your relationship with your resources. We start with the basics: water, food, shelter, and energy. We are simply gathering, experimenting with, and demonstrating sustainable solutions for living in harmony with our bioregion.”

At Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center, they build with natural and salvaged materials, cook with solar ovens, and rely on rain catchment.

Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center, which is located in the Madrid/Cerrillos area of northern New Mexico, appears to be a work-in-progress as volunteers and visitors often get involved in new build projects across the site.

Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center, which started life in 2004, is now home to several different structures including The Strawbale Cottage with its passive solar design features such as southern windows, insulated window coverings, thermal mass in the form of stored water to regulate indoor temperatures, and insulation.

There’s also a yurt, a timber-framing kitchen area, and the Mothership, a hybrid structure of Earthbag rammed earth, strawbale, and salvage post and beam, as well as a greenhouse.
