Sweden’s ReTuna Recycling Galleria is the world’s first ever shopping mall where shoppers can find only reclaimed, recycled and upcycled products.
ReTuna Recycling Galleria, located in the Swedish city of Eskilstuna, is host to 14 stores, a restaurant serving organic food, and a conference centre.
The idea behind ReTuna Recycling Galleria is that customers visit the mall where they can donate old furniture and clothing to the mall’s recycling depot, The Return. Staff from Eskilstuna’s Activity, Motivation and Work (AMA) unit then go through the donated goods, which is then “repaired, fixed up, transformed and refined” and sold at the mall.
ReTuna Recycling Galleria’s website states: “This [ReTuna Recycling Galleria] is not an ordinary mall. Here you can experience shopping in a whole new way – a climate friendly way. The shops in the mall refine, repair and transform old things into new things, which they then sell on. We call it recycling – a climate smarter way of doing business.”
ReTuna Recycling Galleria, which is owned and operated by Eskilstuna Energy and Environment, aims to encourage new ways of shopping that are less harmful to the environment. All businesses in the mall must operate in an “environmentally conscious” way. The goal is for as many stores as possible to deal with recycling.
Among the shops at ReTuna Recycling Galleria are Stockholms Stadsmission, a second-hand clothing, gadgets and furniture store; ReBuyke, which sells recycled and repaired bicycles, garden tools, sporting goods, and camping stuff; Rebox, which sells boxes for house moves that can then be returned to the store once finished with; and Små Busar, which sells recycled organic baby toys and clothing, kids clothing and second-hand maternity wear.
Anna Bergström, ReTuna Recycling Galleria manager, said: “ReTuna should be based on the close and local, at the same time we also want to be a centre for the whole region. These people should be able to come and shop for fine, once-used things and gain knowledge and inspiration for reuse, recycling and sustainability.
“ReTuna Recycling Galleria is the future of shopping. Under one roof we gather businesses in various industries all actively environmentally conscious and for a climate friendly society.
“Sustainability is not about holding back and living less – but to achieve more with the resources we already have.”
ReTuna Recycling Galleria, which celebrated its first year anniversary earlier this month, are currently looking for other businesses, including an eco hairdresser or organic beauty therapist, to join the mall’s growing portfolio of shops “working actively for a better and more sustainable world”.
