Dental Floss: Eco-friendly alternatives

Natural methods for brushing and cleaning teeth has become commonplace as more people become conscious of the impact their health and beauty choices have on both their own health and the environment.

People are now making their own tooth powders with ingredients found in the kitchen. When it comes to flossing, check out your sewing kit. If you’ve got silk, try flossing in between your teeth with this natural thread instead.

Most mainstream flosses are made from nylon which is non-biodegradable, and coated in a petroleum-based synthetic wax.

Silk, on the other, is a natural and biodegradable thread. For centuries, it has been used as a method for thorough cleaning in between the teeth. Cotton is also a natural biodegradable thread that can be used for flossing.

Next time you floss your teeth, give natural silk or cotton a try. It may take some getting used to as it requires a gentle touch to the delicate gum area. However, if you prefer ease of use, try a natural coated silk or cotton floss instead.

There are currently a number of sustainable, natural beeswax-coated or plant based-coated silk flosses and cotton flosses on the market, which are free from all plastics and petrochemicals, and are 100% biodegradable.

Here are some eco-friendly dental floss brands on the market:

RADIUS Natural Biodegradable Silk Dental Floss

RADIUS Natural Biodegradable Silk Dental Floss is spun by hand in Colombia by a fair trade co-op, which supports more than 80 families. It is 100% biodegradable, typically breaking down in 60-90 days. As well as being free from synthetic wax, GM ingredients, flavours or preservatives, it is good value too. RADIUS, as a company, go all out in making sure they re-purpose recycled materials to create their tooth brushes and other dental products, and where possible make them compostable, biodegradable and 100% recyclable too.

Woo Bamboo! Eco-Awesome Floss

Woo Bamboo! Eco-Awesome Floss is “awesome” in many ways. Aside from a fun approach to marketing – from the brand name itself through to the recycled packaging emblazoned with a panda wearing retro shades – this natural, biodegradable silk floss, flavoured with mint, is great for teeth and the planet too.

Woo Bamboo! Eco-Awesome Floss is encased in a plant-based plastic shell, rather than a plastic box, which also acts as a dispenser and minimises waste. Woo Bamboo! Eco-Awesome Floss is also likely to make the experience of flossing more appealing to kids too.

PearlBar Planet-Loving Floss Picks

If you prefer floss picks but are concerned about the amount of plastic used in such products, PearlBar Planet-Loving Floss Picks may be just what you are looking for. An eco-friendly alternative to traditional nylon, wax-coated floss, PearlBar Planet-Loving Floss Picks are 100% biodegradable, breaking down in “soil within six months”. These award-winning mint flavoured floss picks use natural cotton which is infused with activated charcoal, one of nature’s most powerful cleaning agents.

All flosses are available from Amazon and other retailers
