ContainHotel, a boutique hotel currently located on a surf campsite in the Czech Republic, is the latest innovation in the use of shipping containers as sustainable, green buildings.
The ContainHotel has been designed to be mobile, easily demountable and used as a seasonal hotel.
Built by Czech design firm Artikul Architects, this green hotel was created using three repurposed shipping containers, and built to be fully self-sufficient and environmentally friendly.
The small hotel has a total of five rooms which can accommodate up to 13 guests at a time. It consists of two 20-feet containers and one 40-feet high-cube container placed on top. The structure was built on railroad sleepers to leave minimal footprint no matter where it is assembled.
At ContainHotel, the ground floor houses the sanitary facilities, a technical room, a storeroom and one four-bed guest room. On the first floor, there are four rooms accessed through a shared terrace with views over the Elbe riverbank, close to Litomerice, and the surrounding hilly landscape.
Rooms at the ContainHotel were built to be compact, open and airy, with minimal, but elegant features on the interior, and each room opening up to an elongated shared balcony. The interiors are clad in birch plywood, which was also used for the custom-made furniture.
The mobile, eco hotel, ContainHotel, can be transported anywhere, is connected to a local electric power source and has an integrated water reservoir that supplies the showers and sinks, all installed with water saving taps.
To save on heating and cooling, the hotel awnings, which were made of reclaimed wood planks from a local sawmill, insulate the roof and provide shade in the summer months.
The economical and minimalist choice of used materials and design emphasises the hotel philosophy implicating “modern nomadism, maritime beach atmosphere and naval themes”.
In line with its head-to-toe eco friendly principles, only biodegradable toiletries are used at ContainHotel.
