Seeds are one of the planet’s most treasured resources, yet in the last century 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. SEED: The Untold Story is a documentary movie which follows seed guardians as they battle to defend the future of the planet’s food.
Agro-chemical companies such as Monsanto, which is the world’s largest genetically modified seed corporation, now controls over a quarter of the world’s seeds. They own around 60% all of the world’s commercial seeds.
Monsanto, which manufactured hundreds of thousands of tonnes of Agent Orange for use as a chemical weapon in the Vietnam war, is also behind toxic polychlorinated biphenyls and also makes glyphosate, the primary ingredient in Roundup, a widely used but controversial herbicide.
Farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers are standing up to protect the planet’s 12,000 year-old legacy of seeds. SEED: The Untold Story tells the story of seedlings through the eyes of its supporters.
Biodiversity campaigner Vandana Shiva, who set up Navdanya, a network of seed keepers and organic producers spread across 18 states in India, also features in the documentary. She said: “Seed is not just the source of life. It is the very foundation of our being.”
SEED also features interviews with environmental champions Dr Jane Goodall, Andrew Kimbrell, Winona Laduke and Raj Patel.
SEED: The Untold Story is currently available for streaming or for purchase on DVD.
Collective Eye Films, makers of SEED: The Untold Story, are urging people to take action to help preserve the planet’s legacy of seed saving for future generations. The production company have teamed up with Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance to bring the One Million Seed Savers Campaign.
The campaign calls for people to commit to grow and save at least one seed variety. You don’t have to be an experienced gardener to participate. Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance is providing helpful resources to get started. You can find out more about the campaign here.
