Oprah Winfrey dons her witch’s best in A Wrinkle in Time trailer

Disney Pictures has released the first trailer for upcoming fantasy adventure, A Wrinkle in Time, which features a powerful witch played by Oprah Winfrey.

A Wrinkle in Time, which is an adaptation of the 1963 children’s classic by Madeleine L’Engle, stars Meg Murry, a young girl whose scientist father (played by Chris Pine) has been missing ever since he discovered a new planet and used a tesseract to travel there.

Five years later, three celestial beings – Mrs. Which (played by Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who – send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him. The children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that “possesses all of the evil in the universe”.

Mrs. Which is the oldest of the three siblings and the most powerful of the three witches. As the trailer shows, Mrs. Which also happens to front some of the most elaborate costumes, which Oprah Winfrey confessed to being a major draw to her agreeing to star in A Wrinkle in Time.

Director Ava DuVernay, who was nominated for an Oscar for her movie Selma based on the life of civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr., told Entertainment Weekly how the role of Mrs. Which had Oprah Winfrey’s name on it.

Ava DuVernay said: “[Mrs. Which] is so much of what [Winfrey] teaches and shared through her shows over the years … about owning your light and conquering darkness and how we have to power ourselves through this life in a certain way and look out for each other. She dropped into the character so well, but it’s also Oprah.”

A Wrinkle in Time will be released on 9 March 2018
