Urban Farming: Soil testing in inner city Philadelphia to revitalise municipal plots

Urban farming is an opportunity for food security in inner city areas. Access to local food is possible by farming on urban lots, however, urban soil has often been contaminated by industrial uses.

In this short documentary, The Solution to Pollution is Life, The Greenhorns shows how an art  project in Philadelphia created a soil testing site in a bid to revitalise polluted municipal lands, and turn them into assets of food security and engagement.

The documentary is part of The Greenhorns’ film series, OUR LAND, which celebrates and interprets intervention, undertaken by individuals and communities, to shift our food and farm economy.

Each episode from the six-part series addresses a major systemic failure of the old food economy including toxicity, monoculture, monopoly, inequity, exploitation, drought, vulnerability to climate change.
