Green Box Shop – the label behind the “WHY BE RACIST, SEXIST, HOMOPHOBIC OR TRANSPHOBIC WHEN U COULD JUST BE QUIET?” t-shirt adorned on-stage by Frank Ocean – is tackling social justice head on with the truthful emblazoned on tees.
Singer-songwriter Frank Ocean wore the now infamous t-shirt as he performed at Panorama Music Festival at Randall’s Island Park in New York City last week.
Green Box Shop was set up last year by 18-year-old Kayla Robinson in an effort to fill the gap in the market for t-shirts championing social justice. It has gathered a huge following among marginalised groups worldwide since its inception.
Kayla Robinson said: “When I couldn’t find any social justice tee shirts online for myself, that really would grab someone’s attention, I decided to make my own and sell them to raise money to get my yoga teacher certification (Now the ultimate vision is urban farming).”
Kayla Robinson’s brand is dedicated to raising awareness of social justice and politics, and aims to source fairtrade and organic cotton t-shirts.
Other tees in the Green Box Shop range include tie-dye t-shirts with slogans “Climate Change is Real. Trump is a hoax”, “Native Americans Discovered Columbus”, “Protect Indigenous Lives” and crop box t-shirts with the slogan “Make America Native Again”.
Green Box Shop has been a strong supporter of indigenous rights. The fashion label has directly contributed to the resistance against the DAPL, with 100% of the revenue from selected t-shirts going to NoDAPL, an organisation dedicated to stopping the Dakota Access Pipeline.
The t-shirts also carry messages that tackle Islamophobia, LGBT and feminism. Green Box Shop will donate 50% of proceeds from the sales of its climate change t-shirt to The Honeybee Conservancy.
In an interview with The Fader Magazine, Kayla Robinson wrote in an email: “It’s very exciting to see a queer icon like Frank Ocean giving a voice to marginalized groups and using his platform to raise awareness about social justice issues using one of our shirts.
“My business is essentially my life message. I want other companies to know that they can use sustainable/environmentally friendly business practices (fair trade and/or organic fabrics) and still thrive as a business. The fact that Frank Ocean is contributing to this reality is surreal for me and I am eternally grateful.”
