10. ION Luxury Adventure Hotel, Iceland
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel, with its jaw-dropping views of the Icelandic landscape of lava fields and nearby hot springs, is a unique, once in a lifetime experience on many accounts.
Iceland is known for its volcanoes. The country has around 130 volcanoes – both active and inactive, due to the island being situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Euro-Asian plateau drift apart.
It may come as a surprise, or maybe not then, that ION Luxury Adventure Hotel is situated on an active volcano southwest of Iceland, Mount Hengill, which last erupted around 2,000 years ago.
The rural location presents the few locals and guests at ION Luxury Adventure Hotel with an untouched and beautifully raw picture of rural Iceland. Panoramic views of the natural lush landscape boasts moss covered lava, hot springs, and a fresh water lake. Depending on the time of the year, that view also extends to include the Northern Lights too.
Built to complement the environment and utilising sustainable materials, ION Luxury Adventure Hotel’s exteriors are decked out in black lava and concrete to blend in with its volcanic surroundings. It’s standout feature design-wise is in the building being positioned atop a series of pillars that dramatically jut out of the slopes of Mount Hengill.
The spa at ION Luxury Adventure Hotel offers eco spa facilities including a sauna, relaxation room and treatments, but the real treat is in the hotel’s 10-metre long outdoor pool.
Directly underneath the main building, where the pillar foundations are exposed, is where you’ll find the natural hot pool. The outdoor pool is naturally heated by surrounding hot springs, which provide geothermal hot water and energy. Being able to take a swim with the Northern Lights as your backdrop and ahead of you may be the stuff of wildest dreams, but at ION Luxury Adventure Hotel it is a physical reality.
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel has won various awards, including the 2014 World Boutique Hotel Award for Europe’s best sustainable boutique hotel, thanks to its low carbon footprint and water-saving features. Everything from bed linen to the restaurant’s food is organic, fair-trade and sustainable.
Other sustainable features adorned at the ION Luxury Adventure Hotel include furniture made from lava, reused wood, Icelandic wool and driftwood. Toiletries are made from Icelandic herbs. Tables and chairs are built from recycled materials. Lights are made of lava and found-wood. And hand sinks are made from recycled tyres.
Rural it maybe, but ION Luxury Adventure Hotel’s proximity to Thingvellir National Park, Reykjavik and fishing makes the hotel a perfect spot to get connected with “the land of fire and ice”.
