Plastic Bottle Village: A housing solution to plastic pollution

Building a village from plastic bottles on an island in Panama is one man’s vision for helping to preserve the land and divert toxic materials from landfill.

Plastic Bottle Village founder Robert Bezeau initially established a plastic recycling service in Panama, soon after moving from Canada, to address the enormous challenges Boca Del Toro faces with unmanaged waste.

Robert Bezeau collected more than a million plastic bottles, before he turned to the idea of using the waste as insulation for housing.

Robert Bezeau said: “The Village is home to revolutionary techniques in eco-building, and utilizes recycled plastic bottles as its main insulation inside of its concrete walls. This style of home building takes a green approach and the owners of the properties will share a conscious, earth friendly shift in their way of living.

“We will be living inside what we have consumed and thrown away, and will re-construct those materials into modern, stylish, and quality built residencies. The homes are also earthquake resistant, and very cool in temperature, so there is no need for air conditioning. This will aid in conserving energy for The Village, which is a solar friendly community. We are ‘changing the world, without changing the Earth, one home at a time’.”

The Village’s first two-bedroom home recycled 10,000 plastic bottles. Each home comprises a steel cage full of recycled plastic bottles that are then covered in a concrete mix.

Once the housing project is completed, there will be 120 homes and lots, as well as a small boutique lodge with a community garden. Plastic Bottle Village will also include green zones and mini parks ideal for yoga and other outdoor activities.

Robert Bezeau has also committed to creating an educational facility through which he can teach others to implement his unique building technique.
