Water mural artist, Hula has unveiled one of his most challenging pieces yet – a mural of a woman that disappears underwater when the tide rises in Canada’s Bay of Fundy, known for the highest tides on Earth.
To paint the mural, entitled Huna, Sean Yoro aka Hula had to contend with extreme 28ft tide changes in a single day, while standing on his paddleboard.
The mural, which was painted in Saint John, New Brunswick in the Bay of Fundy, was supported by Discover Saint John and Strong & Free.
Hula said: “It was really challenging to adapt to the tide changes, from the dangerous rip currents to the quick rate of rising and dropping water levels, averaging 1 foot every 15 minutes.”
The mural, which measures 30 by 45 feet, took nine days to complete, and was painted entirely using eco-friendly paints. Using non-toxic paint to minimise the environmental impact of his creations gives Hula’s artworks an unknown expiry date.
In an interview with CNN, Hula said: “When using eco-friendly paint, it is inevitable that the sun and saltwater will break it down with time. Calculating the lifespan is very difficult because of variables such as sunlight and currents around the wall itself, but a safe estimate would have it lasting 2-3 months.”
Self-taught artist Sean Yoro, broke into the street art world in 2015, when the release of his unique water murals became widely publicised. Having moved to New York from his native Oahu, Hawaii, Sean Yoro took on the alias Hula.
While the street artist also paints on land, it is his connection to the water element that is his strength. Influenced by his love of the ocean, Hula often takes to the water to create semi-submerged murals on shipwrecks and abandoned docks, while balancing on his stand up paddleboard.
Hula works entirely with oil paint and uses traditional techniques to create soft, female figures interacting with the surface of the water.
