S.K.A.T.E. Nepal: Documentary shows skateboarding empowering young girls

S.K.A.T.E. Nepal is a mini documentary film which documents how skateboarding has the potential to empower young women and children in the South Asian country.

Refurb Skate, a female collective of skaters and snowboarders from Queenstown in New Zealand, held skateboarding workshops in Kathmandu and the new Annapurna skatepark in Pokhara, introducing girls to the sport.

Construction of the new skatepark in Pokhara, Nepal’s second largest city, was completed by an international group of over 30 volunteers in April.

Refurb Skate, whose focus is to grow female skating around the globe, spent three weeks teaching local girls in both Kathmandu and Pokhara to skate, in an effort to make the sport more accessible and less intimidating to girls and children.

The documentary, made by Bibbi Abruzzini and Zyanya Jackson, also shows how in spite of an initial reluctance by boy skaters, the girls and boys soon come together to form a community, sharing the skate parks together, and helping each other learn to skate.
