Sustainable Stays: Finca de Arrieta, Lanzarote

Lanzarote Retreats’ Finca de Arrieta is a fully immersive off-grid retreat for eco savvy travellers in search of some winter sun.

Surrounded by mountain and sea views, Finca de Arrieta is a charming eco village retreat that boasts being “powered by the largest green energy system on the island”.

Offering a range of accommodations, from a luxury villa to silk-lined Mongolian Yurts, Finca de Arrieta is likely to tick the boxes for many traveller’s desires from the lil’uns to adults in search of a stay that is aligned with the rural environment in which it sits in.

A breath of fresh air from the tourist resorts found in other parts of Lanzarote, Finca de Arrieta is located in the traditional village of Arrieta. With a small population of 400, this small fishing village in the northern municipality of Haria provides a delightful and peaceful vacation for its rural, unspoilt and very natural state of being.

Each of the self-catering accommodations at Finca de Arrieta – which include yurts, a barn, a lodge, a cottage and a luxury villa – are tastefully decorated with Indonesian and Moroccan touches. Local materials have been used wherever possible in the restoration of the villa, including the original stonewalls. An additional highlight is the Eco Tower, set in a beautiful converted windmill, which has a natural and raw appeal with its marble flooring and stone walls.

The Canary Island’s are known for their year-round sunshine, and Finca de Arrieta has made the most of that environmentally by installing solar panels and wind turbines, making the retreat powered entirely by wind and solar power.

A family-run business, Finca de Arrieta have put a lot of energy into creating a family-friendly resort, which caters for all budgets and holiday party sizes. In addition to a solar-powered pool, there’s a mini adventure playground and sunken trampoline for children. Kids are also encouraged to bond with Finca de Arrieta’s animal residents including free-range hens and a donkey.

With the local beach, La Garita, a short walk away from the eco village, and local shops nearby, Finca de Arrieta have created a retreat that makes considerable effort in minimising the negative side effects of tourism.
