Superhero Clubhouse, a collective of artists and scientists who create fictional performances around environmental issues, are hosting a winter solstice celebration bringing together a selection of their 2017 projects.
The Solstice Celebration, which takes place in New York on 17 December, will also feature new work in progress from the New York based co-op.
Superhero Clubhouse say: “We [Superhero Clubhouse] create fictional performances rooted in complex environmental questions, practice sustainable production, and collaborate across disciplines and communities to enact a thriving society. We believe theater is an essential tool for evolving our consciousness in the face of global environmental crises.”
Superhero Clubhouse brings together a range of projects operating in the New York area including Big Green Theater, which combines environmental education with an annual green theater festival. Students from schools in the Bushwick area, including fourth, fifth and sixth graders, explore environmental topics with guest experts, and then are guided in writing original eco-plays. Finished plays culminate in a performance at The Bushwick Starr Theater during Earth Week, featuring sustainable and efficient design.
THE LIVING STAGE is another project under the Superhero Clubhouse co-op. THE LIVING STAGE combines horticulture, theatrical design, and community engagement to create recyclable, biodegradable, biodiverse, and edible performance spaces.
The NYC-version, held in the summer, featured a lush living stage situated amidst the urban landscape of the Lower East Side. The space was the used by locals for performances made for and by the community.
Superhero Clubhouse’s Solstice Celebration will feature performances by Big Green Theater and THE LIVING STAGE, among others.
Superhero Clubhouse’s Solstice Celebration takes place on Sunday 17 December at The Parlour in New York. Tickets are available from Brown Paper Tickets.
