Something truly beautiful and honest is occurring in the beauty industry thanks to brands like Bloomtown Botanicals, a 100% palm oil-free company.
Bloomtown Botanicals makes ethical, plant-based eco-luxuries for bath, body and home. All their products are free from palm oil, palm-derived ingredients, sulfates, SLSs, parabens, phthalates, synthetic colours, detergents, wheat and animal products (except ethically harvested beeswax).
Among the product range at Bloomtown Botanicals are artisan soap bars made from ingredients such as coffee beans, cocoa and hazelnut. There’s Salt Soaks for bathtime made from Pink Himalayan Salt and a balancing blend of ingredients from the invigorating, The Grove – including blood orange and pink grapefruit – to the relaxing The Meadow, with lavender and rose geranium.
Bloomtown Botanicals is the brainchild of husband and wife team, Medwin Culmer and Preyanka Clark Prakash. The couple, who handcraft the Bloomtown Botanicals range in small batches from a workshop in Cornwall, are inspired by “the woods, gardens, groves, and other charming nooks of our ideal green community, where every ingredient is nourishing and sustainable”.
The product range at Bloomtown Botanicals is centred around signature scents, which draw on the husband and wife team’s inspirations. There’s the summery notes of juicy blackberry and sweet honeysuckle that make up The Hedgerow; The Woods featuring a fresh blend of cedar, vetiver and bergamot; and The Rose Garden, reminiscent of summery days with a joyous blend of musk rose and white florals.
Today there are many natural beauty brands available to consumers from the global brands to the independents. While they are natural and many claim to be “ethical”, take a closer look at the ingredients lists of some of these brands, and you may still find palm oil or palm oil derivatives in their products.
What’s particularly appealing about Bloomtown Botanicals and sets it apart from many natural beauty brands is their commitment to being a palm-oil free business.
It is a commitment which comes from first hand experience, as Medwin Culmer and Preyanka Clark Prakash explain on the Bloomtown Botanicals website: “We founded Bloomtown in 2016 after spending two years in Indonesia and witnessing first-hand the devastation caused by palm oil cultivation: the loss of virgin forest that is home to endangered orangutans, tigers and so much of the world’s biodiversity,” they write. “We were horrified to learn that so many of our store-bought products had palm oil lurking in their ingredients labels, sometimes in the form of SLSs, parabens, cetearyl alcohols, polysorbates and many other guises. That’s when we decided it would be our mission to create a truly palm oil-free and cruelty-free body & skincare company.”
Bloomtown Botanicals is a “breath of fresh air” when looking for a beauty brand that feels right and does good as well. Aside from an extensive palm oil-free product range, the company also seeks to inform its customers of green practices in an accessible, non-judgmental and far from preachy way which makes it a winner on many accounts. Their website is also a valuable resource, and is where customers can find a downloadable pocket guide to palm oil.
To reduce their environment, Bloomtown Botanicals use recycled/recyclable materials and packaging wherever possible. The company also donate 10% of their profits to environmental and animal rescue charities, such as The Orangutan Project and Bali Cat Foundation.
