Local food experts BigBarn are making it easy for people to “find good, safe, accountable food from local sources”.
Through a postcode specific Local Food Map, BigBarn provides consumers with information on where to find food producers in their area. BigBarn’s Local Food Map currently includes listings of 6,500 local food outlets in the UK.
BigBarn aims to reconnect consumers with their local producers, direct, or through local retailers, and encourage local trade – giving farmers a better deal and consumers fresher, cheaper, accountable food.
BigBarn aims to reverse “the anti-social trend of the UK food industry” which it says has been responsible for small farms going out of business; small rural shops and post offices closing; decreased access to fresh food; food being produced for shelf life and not flavour; too many additives in food; an increased consumption of ready meals; and an increased reliance on oil as specialist farms move away from mixed farming.
According to research, buying local food will divert some of the £120 billion spent in supermarkets to local communities.
BigBarn’s website also operates as a marketplace for consumers to buy from local producers.
