Young inventor Ann Makosinski wants to harvest surplus energy.
The 20-year-old Canadian has invented two creations including Hollow Flashlight – a flashlight that runs off the heat of the human hand – and eDrink – a mug with a USB port that converts excess heat from a hot drink into electricity and allows you to give your iPhone or iPod an extra boost of energy.
Ann Makosinski’s first toy was a box of transistors. From there, her interest in science and creating arose. When she was in 10th grade, Ann Makosinski got the inspiration for her Hollow Flashlight project after discovering that one of her friends in the Philippines got a failing grade because she didn’t have any electricity or light to study with at night. As a potential solution, Ann Makosinski.
The invention won her age category at the 2013 Google Science Fair, as well as numerous awards at the Intel Science and Engineering Fair.
In spite of creating technology-based inventions, Ann Makosinski prefers to “disconnect”. She explains: “My philosophy, ironically, is to unplug — disconnecting from technology will reconnect you with your creativity. I take pride in pushing myself every day to work on creating better inventions to help make a difference in our environment!”
