Composting at home, even in an apartment or small space without a yard, is surprisingly easy and does not require you to go out and buy a composting bin.
If you live in a small space, you can make your own compost bin using a few simple tools that you have at home. Check out the video below on how to make a small composting bin and to start composting.
Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and garden waste currently make up 20-30% of what people throw away, yet it can be composted instead with minimal effort.
Making compost keeps materials such as food scraps and garden waste out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
Composting requires three basic ingredients:
- Browns – This includes materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs
- Greens – This includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds
- Water – Having the right amount of water, greens, and browns is important for compost development
