New Zealand’s Garden to Table is helping to reconnect children to nature and their food supply through hands-on food education.
Garden to Table, which runs programmes across primary schools in New Zealand, builds life skills through practical, hands on classes on how to grow and cook fresh food. The organisation is also helping to build an awareness, among kids, of an individual and collective responsibility for the environment.
Children become involved in all aspects of gardening in an environmentally sustainable garden, cooking and then enjoying a delicious, seasonal meal they have produced themselves.
Through the programme, children develop increased self-esteem and pride in the environment, as well as learning about growing, harvesting, preparing and cooking healthy and nutritious food.
