Too Good To Go is helping eliminate food waste from restaurants, cafes and shops by enabling people to rescue unsold food at a good price.
The app, available for iPhone, iPad and Android, allows people in the UK to find participating restaurants, cafes and shops selling meals at a reduced price.
Too Good To Go connects restaurants, cafes, bakeries and other eateries with surplus food to customers who can pre-order it for collection before they close at up to a 90% discount.
Restaurants make portions of surplus food available via the app, after which Too Good To Go customers can then make a purchase, obtain a digital receipt, and redeem it at the restaurant during the designated pick-up time.
Instead of stores throwing away unsold food, they are able to make a profit by offering food at a good price to customers, who in turn, get a good value meal. Most of all, the environment wins with less food waste related CO2 emissions.
Around a third of all food produced worldwide is wasted. If this food waste were a country it would be the third largest emitter of CO2 – only behind the USA and China.
Too Good To Go – which is currently available in the UK and eight countries in Europe including France, Norway, the Netherlands and Germany – has partnered with over 5,000 stores to fight food waste, and over 2.5 million meals have been rescued.
The app enables users to browse food retailers in their area who are offering meals at a fraction of the regular price. The meals can vary depending on what’s left, but the app provides a list of what customers can expect to get.
Too Good To Go is a great idea with a good purpose, which is ultimately to help the environment. A number of reviews about the app have unfairly slated it for not putting the meals in to categories, such as vegan or vegetarian. However, they have completely missed the purpose behind the app and food waste philosophy.
For those who need to know what they are getting when they order their food or have specific dietary requirements, this app is not for you. For those who want a fresh and hearty meal from a food retailer they like or trust and also want to do their bit to fight food waste, then this app is a treat.
Too Good To Go is available to download for free from the App Store and Google Play.
