Finnish climate change group, Melting Ice is aiming to raise around half a million dollars to carve US President Donald Trump’s face into an arctic iceberg, as a warning against climate change.
The ambitious stunt, entitled Project Trumpmore, will create a Mount Rushmore-like monument of Donald Trump’s face on a large piece of melting ice.
In a statement, Melting Ice asked: “Will the carving of Donald Trump’s face on an arctic iceberg melt or last for a thousand years?”
The climate change group claim the huge bust of Donald Trump would prove that climate change was real as it melts away. The project is a great way to “demonstrate that climate change is happening”, according to Melting Ice, while also putting the onus on the US President who refuses to act.
Nicolas Prieto, the chairman of Melting Ice, said: “Global warming is one of the most important issues and topics of today, There are still people who ponder whether it’s a real issue.
“We want to build the monument for all of us, so we can see how long the sculpture lasts before melting. Often people only believe something when they see it with their own eyes.”
Donald Trump withdrew the US from the international Paris climate accord. He has previously questioned whether climate change exists at all, and has even said that parts of the world would benefit from the effects.
Domestic policies administered under Donald Trump’s presidency include ramping up fossil fuel development and rolling back emission standards at the exact time scientists and experts say an urgent World War II-style mobilisation to transition from dirty to renewable energy sources is needed.
He has also claimed that climate change was “created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive”.
If Melting Ice raise enough funds to get to the construction phase, a team of Finnish and Mongolian ice sculptors will create the 115-foot ice sculpture of the US President’s face. It is expected that the building will take four weeks and the process will be documented and broadcast via a live feed.
Melting Ice hope that they will be able to illustrate the dangers of climate change by watching to see how long the sculpture takes to melt.
Melting Ice, who are currently searching for a location for the project. are also looking at minimising all C02 emissions caused by travelling and other actions related to the project.
