DIY All Natural Cat Litter Freshener

If you have a cat or more felines in your house, you may have at some point considered buying a cat litter deodoriser. Make your own instead – that way you can purchase simple and natural ingredients that are non-toxic to your kitties.

The below remedy combines baking soda with essential oils to give a light fragrance. I have used cedarwood essential oil for the cat litter freshener as it is one of few essential oils that are non-toxic to cats.

Be aware that cats have a very strong smell so go easy on the amount of drops you use as what may be a “very light scent” to you may be “super strong” to your kitties and can put them off using the litter tray at all. Also make sure you use a good quality pure essential oil. I chose Atlas Cedarwood, native to Morocco, which is

Ingredients:

  • 250mg of Baking soda
  • 15-20 drops of Cedarwood (Atlas) Essential Oil
  • Mason Jar

Method:

  1. Fill the mason jar with approximately half of the baking soda
  2. Add 15-20 drops of cedarwood essential oil
  3. Fill the jar with the remaining baking soda
  4. Cap and shake to combine
  5. Leave at least 24hours before using, allowing time for the essential oils to soak in

Any cat litter freshener needs to be gradually introduced to your cats. When using the cat litter freshener for the first time, sprinkle over the litter after cleaning the box and then again after a few days.

If you have multiple kitties and multiple litter boxes, add the cat litter freshener to just one box for a few days before using it with other boxes. Once your cat(s) are used to the freshener and you know that they are ok with it, then continue to use it once daily or every other day.
