Ochis Coffee develop sunglasses frames made from natural coffee and flax

Entrepreneurs are finding innovative ways to make use of old coffee grounds, and now sunglasses can be added to the list. Ochis Coffee has created the world’s first organic sunglasses made from natural coffee and flax.

The handmade frame completely degrades in soil or water, 100 times faster than plastic turning into a natural fertiliser for new plant growth.

The environmentally friendly frames – which comes in a range of five traditional shapes including round, wayfarer-style and cat eye – are durable, have “no aversion to water” and even smell like coffee.

After undergoing extensive research and development, Ochis Coffee founder Max Gavrilenko and his team have developed a process that eliminates all petroleum, opting instead for a biopolymer made from coffee cake (compressed coffee grounds), flax sawdust and a natural glue made from soybean oil.

The Ukranian based company are expected to launch a Kickstarter campaign this month to fund the first five sustainable models of the organic sunglasses.
