Chewing gum litter is a blight the world over, and second to cigarette butts it is one of the most littered items. It has posed such a problem on the streets in Amsterdam, that the city has created Gumshoe, a sneaker with soles made from chewing gum taken from Amsterdam’s pavements.
Designed in collaboration with I Amsterdam, Explicit Wear and Gum-Tec, the sneaker is meant to raise awareness of Amsterdam’s gum litter problem in a creative and positive way.
In the Netherlands 1.5 million kilos of gum ends up on the street every year.
Gum-Tec developed a new type of rubber made from recycled chewing gum. While Gumshoe’s sole is made entirely from recycled chewing gum, Amsterdam shoe brand, Explicit Wear designed a map of Amsterdam which features on the sole. The sneakers are currently available in black and pink.
Other products which have been created using Gum-Tec include rubber balls, pencils, erasers, rulers, frisbees, lunch boxes, guitar picks, and a comb.
