Jajamän: Sustainable backpacks made from cork and recycled materials

Swedish fashion brand Jajamän began life as a swatch on the wall, now the cork is being carried around as backpacks.

Jajamän creates sustainable bags made from cork, which is natural and biodegradable. Cork is a sustainable and durable material that grows on trees.

The simple and timeless design of Jajamän backpacks is inspired by Scandinavian heritage for everyday use.

A year-long search for an eco-friendly fabric that was a cruelty-free alternative to leather culminated when Jajamän founder Netta Lönnqvist met a craftsman at a fabric show in Sweden,  who was was showcasing a fabric sourced from the bark of Portugal’s cork oak trees.

Netta Lönnqvist took a swatch of the fabric home and tacked it on the wall where it represented the beginning of what she calls, “a love story.”

Each Jajamän backpack is made from genuine vegan cork material, sewn and made in Portugal. In its aim to be eco-friendly throughout the design and manufacturing process, Jajamän has also made use of recycled materials including recycled metal for the buckles, zippers made from post-consumer plastic, and tags and trims are made from recycled paper.

The backpacks are available in three colours including black, midnight, and nature, and are available to purchase from Indiegogo.
