Tarot is a tool that anyone can use in their communications with their inner being or intuition. Fortunately there are numerous decks to suit everyone – whether a seasoned user or advanced tarot reader.
In recent years, I have come across a growing number of artists specialising in illustration and comic books developing tarot decks, many of whom are female. It is these decks that particularly resonates with me, especially given that I have a strong affinity with this type of art.
Such decks, like many others I’m sure, may primarily capture a person’s interest through the artwork itself, however this then opens up the pathway for them to begin to work with their own intuition and start to interpret the messages of the tarot that is pertinent to them.
Here are a few decks that have caught my attention recently:
Modern Witch Tarot Deck by Lisa Sterle
Modern Witch Tarot is a vibrant and youthful deck from Columbus-based artist, Lisa Sterle. A modern take on the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, Modern Witch Tarot is vivid and fun, and features an all-female cast as it were.
Modern Witch Tarot is due to be published by Liminal 11 later this year.
Tarot by Winona Cookie
Although not strictly a tarot deck, possibly one in the making, Winona Cookie’s tarot illustrations are wonderful depictions of the tarot with a multicultural vibe.
The Queen of Pentacles is depicted as an Arabian lady in her groove in an abundant garden, with peacocks, rose bushes, rabbits and even a snail in tow, kicking back on a chaise longe with a shisha in her hands. While Strength features a Nubian lady, dressed in a modern day summer dress and Dick Whittington-style boots, as she rides a lion with the Egyptian pyramids in the background. The setting could be modern day or the past, depending on which way you look at it.
Winona Cookie is the artist moniker of San Diego-based psychologist, Ramona Szczerba, who explores her love of steampunk and artistic passions in her spare time.
Maori Tattoo Deck by Roxana Paul
Australia-based tarot artist and witch Roxana Paul has created several delightful decks. Maori Tattoo Deck is a particular favourite centred around the symbolism and spirituality of the Maori people of Aotearoa, New Zealand. It’s a colourful deck with a strong visual and symbolic impact.
