Ireland reclaiming its greenery with plans to plant 440 million trees by 2040 to tackle climate change

The Emerald Isle is reclaiming its green as Ireland announced plans to plant 440 million trees by 2040, as part of its efforts to tackle climate change.

Ireland first announced its climate plan in June, pledging to create 19,768 acres of new forestry land a year. Now the country is aiming to plant 22million trees every year over two decades. The target is to plant 70% conifer trees and 30% broad leaf trees.

The proposal hopes to see Ireland transition to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 through a series of measures, including a new carbon tax, increased investment in renewable energy and shift in agriculture and land use.

A key part of the plan will be to persuade farmers to designate some of their holdings for tree-planting in the future, while some 50,000 homes will need to undergo deep retrofits each year to meet the the plan’s targets, according to the Irish Times.

  1. Unfortunately it seems as if there might be a bit of greenwashing going on with this announcement from the Irish government. The initiative seems to be more about switching farmers to forestry as a crop than simply planting trees to help with climate change. There’s a petition running in Ireland to change the ratio of conifer to deciduous, as conifer forest don’t support biodiversity in the way that deciduous forests do.

    1. Thanks for the insight. Yes a lot of the reports on this story have been saying that the farmers are reticent about this move and up in arms about planting trees on their land which implies they are against planting trees to combat climate change, which doesn’t make sense at all. So thank you for shedding light on the truth and what’s really going on 🙂
