@grombre: An Instagram community celebrating women of all ages embracing their grey hair

More and more women worldwide, of all ages, are ditching the hair dye in favour of natural locks and yes, that does mean a healthy dose of grey/silver/white hair.

In the past, going grey was not an easy transition for women due to outdated beliefs, pre-conceived notions and perceptions about going grey. Going grey is not a “sign of aging” as it affects young people in their 20s and younger even. Helping women to celebrate the transition are Instagram accounts like @grombre, which reposts and celebrates women of all ages who are ditching dyes and embracing “the natural phenomenon of grey/silver/white hair”.

What started off as a small instagram community in July 2016 has now turned into a lifestyle for women, with more than 137,000 followers. A support network essentially, followers of all ages share their stories about their journey to grey, white or silver hair.

The brainchild of 27-year-old Martha Truslow Smith, Grombre was founded to help her through her own transition, giving her encouragement on the hard days when she was growing out her hair, as well as to create a platform to celebrate the beauty of grey hair.

The North Carolina-based creative’s own journey started at the age of 24, when she decided to ditch the dye after realising that the pressure of dying her roots was in fact chipping away at her self-esteem.

The Duchess of Cambridge made front-page headlines when she stepped out showing her silver roots in 2013. Celebrities including Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez have openly spoken about going grey, while Rachel McAdams, Jessica Biel, Jamie Lee Curtis and Helen Mirren have walked the red carpet with grey hair in tow.

In an interview with Bored Panda, Martha Truslow Smith said: “I want to challenge the way we think about what we consider ‘beautiful,’ and why, and propose that we have more important things to spend our precious time, energy and resources on if we find our hearts aren’t aligning with the things we find to be someone else’s biases.”
