Granby Workshop have taken crushed glass, old tiles, factory sludge and other waste destined for landfill and turned it into 100% recycled ceramic tableware.
The ceramics manufacturer, based in Liverpool, tested numerous materials from waste streams before coming up with the winning formula for Granbyware.
Granby Workshop said: “We set out to develop our recipe entirely from waste and nothing else – not a single gram of new material, no binders, no additives, strictly waste. Sourced as locally as possible, transformed through our process into a product as beautiful, durable and long-lasting as anything else out there.”
In the UK, millions of tonnes of ceramic, glass and stone waste goes to landfill each year. Each year more is recycled, but according to Granby Workshop, broken tiles end up in backfill beneath a road, not a new tile.
Granbyware’s tableware range includes plates and bowls in various sizes and mugs, in four glaze colours. The tableware is also 100% dishwasher and microwave safe. Available on Kickstarter, customers can choose from a defined set of dishes, bowls and mugs, or choose individual pieces.
Launched on Kickstarter, Granbyware have to date raised £50,061, surpassing their £50,000 goal. Granbyware will be avialable from next year.
