Around 600 YouTubers worldwide, led by MrBeast, have come together to raise $20 million by the end of the year to plant 20 million trees.
The #TeamTrees initiative was set up in May when fans of MrBeast (known as Jimmy Donaldson in real life) suggested he plant 20 million trees to celebrate reaching 20 million subscribers on YouTube. Former NASA engineer and YouTuber Mark Rober partnered directly with MrBeast to co-launch the fundraiser. Every donation goes to the Arbor Day Foundation, which pledges to plant one tree for every US dollar donated.
Although the #TeamTrees initiative was launched earlier this, it has started to gain momentum more recently after several other prominent YouTube stars joined the campaign, and has since won the backing of Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
Last week, Elon Musk donated $1 million towards the tree planting campaign. The Tesla boss even changed his Twitter name to Treelon in support. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also made a significant contribution to the campaign, donating 150,000 trees to the tree-planting cause.
According to MrBeast, YouTube is also planning on matching the next million dollars donated to TeamTrees through the YouTube donate button. The goal is to raise $20 million by the end of 2019 and for planting to begin in January 2020. To date the campaign has raised $12,848,623.
All of the trees funded through the campaign will be planted before December 2022.
