Recipe: Tom Yum Soup with Chicken

Tom Yum Soup is quite possibly the best soup to have been created – a blend of hot and sour tastes, Tom Yum Soup is a perfect immune-boosting soup for the winter months.

Originating from Thailand, at the base of Tom Yum Soup is the three fragrant ingredients of lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves. It is further seasoned with lime juice and fish sauce, along with a generous amount of bruised bird’s eye chilies, and fresh herbs such as coriander and spring onions.

Some recipes call for the addition of Nam Prik Pao, which is a Thai chilli paste, while others simply add the fresh chillies and tamarind paste instead. Nam Prik Pao is a combination of chillies, garlic and shallots which is is fried in vegetable oil and flavoured with fish sauce, palm sugar, and tamarind paste.

What’s great is that Tom Yum Soup is also easy to make so if you have a Thai grocery store nearby, grab yourself a few simple ingredients instead of the ready-made paste.
