The largest rooftop urban farm in the world has opened in Paris, complete with a terrace bar and restaurant.

Situated on the 14,000 sq m roof of the French capital’s exhibition centre Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, Nature Urbaine features 30 species of plants, such as tomatoes, strawberries, aubergines, radishes and basil – some of which are grown through the help of aeroponic farming.

The farm aims to produce 2,000 pounds worth’ of fruits, vegetables and spices, from around 20 different species, every day. The produce will be distributed to citizens and restaurants in the nearby area. There are 140 allotment plots too, which can be used by local Parisians for €320 a year.

For those who want to get involved in Nature Urbaine, the farm offers several services. These include vegetable garden rentals for residents, workshops and educational visits.

The world’s largest rooftop urban farm was meant to open its doors earlier this year, but plans were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It officially launched in May, and the rooftop space now also has a bar and restaurant, which welcomed diners for the first time on 1 July.

Nature Urbaine hopes that the farm will bring communities together and provide low-carbon food to homes and restaurants in southern Paris.
