German startup KALEA has developed a compact kitchen appliance that turns organic waste into real compost in just 48 hours, offering a convenient, clean, and odourless way to process daily kitchen waste
The Stuttgart-based company’s KALEA is the first kitchen composter that automatically shreds, mixes, dries, and provides genuine, nutrient-rich compost.
The minimalist-designed KALEA composter has the capacity to process up to 10 litres of organic waste per cycle, and can even compost small bones and nutshells. A full container of bio-waste produces about 1.5 litres of nutrient-rich compost, which is optimally suited to fertilise garden and balcony plants. As a valuable by-product, water left behind from the composting process is ideal for giving plants an extra nutrient boost.
The composting process itself takes place with the help of microorganisms, which are naturally present in all organic materials. They naturally provide the necessary decomposition process. Using an intelligent sensor and control system, KALEA creates the perfect environment for microorganisms by combining an optimal temperature, humidity, and ventilation inside the appliance.
Bio-waste is a rottable, generally wet waste. The total annual volume of bio-waste in the EU is estimated to be between 76.5 and 102 million tonnes of food and garden waste. Incorrectly disposed bio-waste causes methane gas. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and is 20 times more harmful to the climate than CO2. With KALEA, every single person can make a valuable contribution to the environment each time they compost a bit of organic waste.
Set up by three young entrepreneurs – Christian Gärtner, Dr Johannes Luschitz, and Patrick Nennewitz – KALEA was founded in 2017 with the aim to enable households – whether in the city or the countryside – to be able to compost organic waste with ease and to use this resource in a sustainable manner.
Dr Johannes Luschitz, Head of technology at KALEA, said: “With KALEA, we want to increase the comfort in dealing with kitchen waste at home, and at the same time, make a sustainable contribution to the environment. By solving the annoying disposal of kitchen waste, not only do we obtain nutrient-rich fertilizer for plants, but we also avoid the generation of climate-damaging methane gas.”
The smart-enabled KALEA kitchen composter is compatible with a specially developed app for iOS and Android. Along with allowing users to start and monitor the device remotely, the app also tracks how much organic waste has already been composted and the amount of CO2 saved by using KALEA.
KALEA, which is in the development stage after a successful crowdfunding campaign launched via Kickstarter last year, retails at €899.
