22. Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination, Italy
The Tuscan resort and spa, Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination, which stands on the millenary “Hot Spring of Saturn”, has been welcoming guests during its century-long history who flock to the renowned thermal waters, which can be enjoyed at the resort, as well as accessed from the public area of Cascate del Mulino, with its cascading waterfall.
Located at the foot of the medieval town of Saturnia and surrounded by the Tuscan countryside, Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination recently underwent a complete makeover, being revamped into a modern health spa. The new design of Terme di Saturnia, with its sustainable approach honours the natural conditions of the original thermal spring with preserved wooden furnishings, décor crafted by local artisans, a green “living wall” incorporated into parts of the interior décor, as well as green spaces.
The main draw to this luxury hotel and spa is the location on which it stands – the healing waters of Terme di Saturnia, which spring from a volcanic crater (where the spa has its swimming pool) and then runs for 500 metres along a natural creek. The pure spring water is enriched with a high concentration of gases and mineral salts – which surfaces in the large thermal pool at the centre of the resort at the constant temperature of 37.5°C.
The long underground journey of Saturnia’s water starts from the slopes of Mount Amiata, just a few dozen kilometres away from Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination’s Thermal Spring. The water flows for 40 years along its underground course, slowly filtering through micro cracks in the rock, to re-emerge in the Spring of the thermal pool which can be seen from the resort.
From the resort’s thermal baths, the water continues to flow through the adjacent Terme, one of the most extensive thermal spas in Europe, to enter its outdoor thermal pools and tubs as well as supplying the hydro-massage tubs and circulatory wading paths.
From the Thermal Baths, the water then flows for a few kilometres through the meadows of Saturnia before reaching a natural waterfall, known as the Cascate del Mulino, which flows around an old mill and thus creates a number of natural baths in the rocks.
Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination has dedicated five outdoor thermal pools, whirlpools and vascular courses with hot and cold water, indoor and outdoor relaxation entirely to wellness. The composition of the water is beneficial in the treatment of skin conditions including dermatitis, psoriasis and acne; inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism; and in treating respiratory tract and ear, nose and throat ailments.
Elsewhere Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination’s SPA and beauty clinic offers treatments including mud therapy and massages with bamboo. Cold pressed from bamboo marrow, the oil used in the bamboo massage has excellent hydrating and elasticising properties, as well as a high content of silicon and antioxidants.
Housed in a historic building dating back to 1919, all 124 guestrooms have also undergone a renovation with a focus on guest comfort and preserved wooden furnishings.
