Electronic music pioneer King Britt has revealed an exhibit – Blacktronika: Afrofuturism in Electronic Music – which honours people of colour who have been instrumental in bringing house, techno, drum & bass and experimental music to the forefront.
Running from now until 25 March at the University Of California (UC), San Diego, Blacktronika: Afrofuturism in Electronic Music also serves as an introduction to the course that King Britt leads at the university.
The DJ, producer and teacher is hosting the exhibition at The Nest at Geisel Library at UCSD. The exhibit includes course materials, a selection of vintage and modern electronic instruments, and ephemera associated with King Britt’s career and current research.
According to King Britt, the Blacktronika course explores “the lineage of many of the groundbreaking Black electronic artists who have been integral but overlooked in the development and commodification of house, techno, drum & bass and experimental music.”
Previous guests include Theo Parrish, Ron Trent, Masters At Work, Herbie Hancock, Flying Lotus, Mad Professor, Elsa M’Bala, Amp Fiddler and Questlove.
